Cobras Drop SAC Road Contest to Wingate

WINGATE, N.C.- Coker women's lacrosse dropped their first South Atlantic Conference game of the season against Wingate by a score of 13-10 on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 25).
Coker jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after twelve minutes of play with two goals from Haley McCusker, and one each from Mackenzie Baker and Marabeth Durden. The Bulldogs proceeded to go on an 8-2 run to close out the half for a 10-6 lead.
After two quick goals from Wingate, the Cobras responded with two goals of their own. The scores came from Mackenzie Baker and Haley McCusker to cut the deficit back down to four goals with just over twenty minutes remaining in the contest. Wingate would stretch the lead back out to five, before goals from Mackenzie Baker and Claudia Jenkins pulled the Cobras within just three with eight minutes to play. Next, neither team was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the game, giving Wingate the three-goal victory.
Baker and McCusker led the Cobras with three goals each, while Baker also dished out an assist. Marabeth Durden and Claudia Jenkins rounded out the attack with two goals apiece. Coker picked up ten draw controls with Baker, Durden, Faith Kent, and Lindsay Ordemann all tied for the team-high with two. Coker collected 19 ground balls to Wingate's 18, with Cassie Williams and Ordemann leading the way with five and four ground balls, respectively. Williams (7-3) made seven saves in the loss.
The Cobras will hit the road again for a South Atlantic Conference matchup with Catawba on Wednesday (Mar. 29) for a 4:00 p.m. opening draw.
