The Coker women’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaking 11-10 South Atlantic Conference competition to the Catawba Indians in overtime on Saturday (Apr. 5)
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaking 11-10 South Atlantic Conference competition to the Catawba Indians in overtime on Saturday (Apr. 5), at Byerly Park.
Coker got off to a quick start in the first half, taking a 5-2 lead into halftime. The two teams would then exchange goals in the second half, but Catawba would outscore the Cobras 8-5 to force overtime with the score tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation.
At the start of the overtime period, the Cobras got into penalty trouble and were force to play man-down after two yellow cards. Catawba then took advantage of the opportunity and scored the go-ahead goal with just over four minutes remaining. As time continued to tick closer to zero, Coker could not find the back of the net to tie the game, and time would expire in favor of the visiting team.
Mackenzie Baker would be the offensive catalyst for Coker, as she tallied five goals on the day and topped it off with two assists. Hayley Ferone scored two goals of her own, while Ashlyn Burgett, Marabeth Durden, and Danielle Holcomb all recorded one goal apiece.
Mandy Lopez headed the defense with 16 saves between the pipes in 66 minutes of action.
Coker will look to shake off the loss this Monday (Apr. 7) as they travel to Chowan to participate in a nonconference matchup. Game time is set for a 3:00 p.m. start time.
