The Coker women's lacrosse team picked up their first-ever South Atlantic Conference victory in a 19-11 win over Wingate University on Saturday (Mar. 1).
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's lacrosse team defeated the Wingate Bulldogs 19-11 on Saturday (Mar. 1) in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action. The win improves the Cobras to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Hayley Ferone had a record-setting day for the Navy and Yellow registering a team-record eight points on four goals and four assists. Also getting into the scoring action was Mackenzie Baker who for the second consecutive game scored five goals. Marabeth Durden and Ashlyn Burgett each tallied hat-tricks of their own with three goals apiece, while Shannon Jessop found the back of the net twice. Lindsay Ordemann and Danielle Holcomb rounded out the scoring for Coker with a goal apiece. In addition to her goals, Durden led Coker defensively with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Mandy Lopez tallied eight saves on the day.
The Cobras struck early and often as they scored six unanswered goals before allowing the Bulldogs to get on the board. The Navy and Yellow would continue to pour on the offense using another 6-0 run to open up a 12-1 lead 8:30 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs would close the first half on a 4-3 run to make the halftime lead 15-5 in favor of Coker.
The second half would produce far less scoring for the Navy and Yellow as they only managed four goals in the half and allowed six. However, the fast start would prove to be enough for the Cobras as they coasted to an easy 19-11 victory in their first-ever SAC competition.
The Cobras will return to the field on Wednesday (Mar. 5) when they host the Queens University of Charlotte Royals in a South Atlantic Conference showdown. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at Byerly Park.
