How It Happened
A great start for the Cobras came when they secured the doubles point to head up 1-0 into singles play. Wins on courts two and three, with Court 3 providing the clincher, left Court 1 unfinished. In singles play, Huynh quickly grabbed a win on court four to put the Cobras up 2-0. He lost the first game in the first set but then put his head down and went to work, not dropping another game en route to a dominant performance.
The Wolves took three of the next four courts to tie it at 3-3 and bring this all down to court six. Getting the win in that time frame was Winter, who was 3-5 down in a second set and was prepping to head to a third before momentum picked up to take it to a tiebreak. He was dominant in said tiebreak, winning 7-1 to clinch that victory.
Now, on court six, it was a match to remember for Pugliese. After winning a 6-4 battle in set one, set two was dropped in a 7-5 dramatic feud. All of a sudden, the momentum was on the side of the Wolves. Pugliese quickly fell 2-5 down, and all things were pointing to a Newberry win. However, he dug deep and found a way, winning the next four games to go up a break 6-5. Battling through cramps, the sophomore used his service to finish off the five-game run in the third set and take the victory for the Cobras!
Notables
- Pugliese not only provided the match-winning three-setter on Court 6, but he also combined with Van Asdonck to provide the clinching matchup in doubles on Court 3. Ice was coursing through his veins this afternoon, coming in clutch when it mattered the most.
- This was the last college tennis match ever for both Winter and Lamers, and the two end their careers as a pair of the most influential Cobras to ever play for the Coker Men's Tennis team. We thank you for all you have done!
