Men’s Lacrosse Prevails Over Tusculum in Offensive Shootout

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Coker College men's lacrosse team (6-5, 3-3 SAC) prevailed over the Tusculum College Pioneers 17-13 in an offensive shootout Friday (Apr. 6) evening in South Atlantic Conference play.

The Cobras began the contest by dominating the first half of action. Coker outscored Tusculum 5-1 in the first quarter and 3-1 in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead into halftime. DeShaun Ormond began the scoring by finding the back of the next in the first minute and a half of action. Tusculum responded with a goal, but the Cobras answered with four straight goals to end the the quarter. Andrew Dappen, Rylee Marsh, Justin Hopkins, and Ethan Irizarry all tallied goals during the run.

After nearly eight minutes of scoreless action in the second quarter, Dappen opened up the scoring with a goal, assisted by Marsh. The Pioneers went on to notch their second goal of the game, but once again, the Cobras answered by scoring back-to-back goals to end the frame. Matt Murphy and Brooks Long found the back of the cage during the run.

The second half of action was much more competitive, as the Pioneers outscored the Cobras 5-3 in the second quarter to trim Coker's lead to 11-7. Denton Wilks, Marsh, and Long recorded scores in the quarter.

Next, Tusculum narrowed Coker's lead to 14-12 with 4:50 remaining in regulation. With the lead slowly dwindling away, the Navy and Gold stepped up by outscoring Tusculum 3-1 to seal the victory. Irizarry scored twice unassisted and Ormond followed with an unassisted goal.

Offensively, the Cobras had a duo of five-point scorers in Irizarry and Marsh. Additionally, Murphy, Ormond, and Long recorded three points each. On the defensive end, Ormond had a monster game, causing two turnovers and scooping up 12 ground balls. Chris Hagy collected 15 saves in between the pipes.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 11) when they host Wingate at 7 p.m. in conference action.
