Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Tilt to Newberry on Wednesday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University men's lacrosse dropped its South Atlantic Conference tilt to Newberry on Wednesday (Mar. 17) by a score of 17-11.

Ethan Irizarry started things off with an unassisted goal two minutes in, before back-to-back goals from Newberry 1:02 apart gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead halfway through the quarter. Joe Venazio would score from Matt Murphy to tie the game at two with five minutes to play in the quarter, before Newberry would score the final two goals of the period to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Newberry increased its lead to 6-2 with the first two goals of the second quarter, before Coker responded with goals less than a minute apart from Dominic Madlang and Richie Timothee. Newberry ended the quarter on a four-goal run to take a 10-4 lead to the half.

Coker would score the first two goals of the third quarter with Henry Haskett starting things off an assist from Murphy, before Andrew Dappen scored unassisted with 10 minutes to play in the period to get Coker back within four. The Wolves would score the next three goals, before Timothee would net the final marker of the quarter from Cal Gibson, bringing the score to 13-7 in favor of Newberry headed to the fourth.

Coker scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to get back within three halfway through the period. Irizarry scored from Murphy three and a half minutes in, before Venazio scored from Madlang less than a minute later. Dappen would score from Venazio with seven and a half minutes left, before Newberry would counter with its own three-goal run to take a 16-10 lead into the final four and a half minutes. James Brugger would score Coker's final goal of the afternoon from Irizarry, before the last Newberry goal would bring the game to its final score.

Irizarry, Timothee, Venazio and Dappen each scored two goals on the day, while Madlang, Brugger and Haskett each scored once. Murphy dished out a team-high three assists, while Irizarry, Madlang, Venazio and Gibson each recorded one assist. Venazio is now tied for second all-time in career points (133) with Rylee Marsh  (2015-18), while Irizarry is now in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time career points list. Vnazio led the Cobras with seven ground balls on the afternoon, while Jason McNeany was second on the team with six on the day. 12 others picked up ground balls on the day for Coker. Brugger led the Cobras with three caused turnovers on the day, while Venazio and Corey Gales each forced two. Four others caused turnovers on the day for the Cobras. Chris Hagy made 12 saves on the afternoon in cage.

Coker is back in action next Wednesday (Mar. 24) at No. 11/12 Queens (N.C.) in South Atlantic Conference action. Opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
