Cobras Fall to Lions In SAC Road Matchup
The Coker men's lacrosse team lost 16-10 on Saturday to Mars Hill in a road matchup.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Coker College men's lacrosse team dropped a South Atlantic Conference road matchup the Mars Hill University Lions 16-10 on Saturday (Apr. 2) evening.
Shane Wilson got things started, scoring a goal within the first two minutes to put Coker ahead 1-0. After a response goal by the Lions, Wilson found the net once again, this time midway through the quarter to put Coker back up 2-1. However, Mars Hill finished the quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.
After a goal by the Lions extended their lead to three, back-to-back Coker goals by Josh Smith and Brooks Long cut the deficit to 5-4. Smith would score two more goals in the quarter, but the Cobras found themselves down 7-6 as the teams departed for halftime.
Despite goals by Rylee Marsh and Wilson in the third, the Navy and Gold was outscored 4-2 in the quarter and were trailing 11-8 going into the final 15 minutes.
Marsh struck against just two and half minutes into the fourth with his second goal of the evening, cutting the lead to just two. Mars Hill regained momentum in the final 10 minutes, outscoring the Cobras 5-1 in that time period to take the eventual 16-10 win.
Wilson had four goals, while Mike Martiello had four assists. Smith and Marsh both had three-point evenings, Smith's coming via three goals, Marsh's by way of two goals and one assist. Long also found the back of the net.
The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday to take on the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a non-conference matchup. Opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
