Cobra Lacrosse Opens Inaugural Season with 14-7 Win
The Coker lacrosse team picked up a convincing 14-7 win over Shorter College in the opening game of their inaugural season on Friday night.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College lacrosse team opened their inaugural season with a convincing 14-7 win over Shorter College on Friday night. The Cobras were led by junior Steven Marciano's (Shirley, N.Y.) five goals, including the first goal in program history.
Shorter was first on the board with a pair of goals in the first quarter, but the Cobras answered with four goals, taking the 4-2 lead. The Hawks managed one more goal at the end of the quarter to make it 4-3 at the end of the first.
The Cobras proceeded to got on a 10-1 run, making the score 14-4 with just eight minutes left in the game. Shorter did add three more goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter for a final score of 14-7.
Along with Marciano's five-goal game, Keith LaClair (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists. Ryan Vento (Bellmore, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists, while John Bretton (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Will Hogan (Greenville, S.C.) and Timmy Smith (Commack, N.Y.) each had a goal.
The Coker lacrosse team will be back on the field on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at home against Catawba College. Face-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Byerly Park.

Marciano scored five goals in Coker's inaugural lacrosse game, including the first goal in school history.
The McDonald's Player of the Game is presented by the Hartsville McDonald's and is given to the most outstanding performer during each Coker College home athletic event.
